Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value is a commonly used rating system for filters, describing their ability to capture several ranges of particle sizes from the air that passes through the filters. MERV is based on a laboratory test and is not representative of how a filter will actually perform in a home. MERV can help you compare filters but should not be the sole basis for evaluating a filter. What do filter rating scores mean? The filter performance rating system is used to compare filters and describes a filters ability to remove particles from the air. The HVAC, (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) industry uses ASHRAE 52.2 testing, which assigns a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) A larger MERV number means better filtration. What does ASHRAE mean? The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers.Efficiency and Performance What should I consider when purchasing an air filter?-Filter efficiency- The type, size and number of particles the filter is able to trap. -Is it pleated? A pleated filter provides additional air filtering surface area upon which particles can be trapped. -Is it electro statically charged? Filters with electrostatic charges can attract and trap particles other filters can miss. -What sizes and types of particulates does it capture? Here the smaller the better, and is it rated for your problem? What is Pressure Drop? A measure of the filters ability to allow the appropriate amount of air to flow through. Pressure drop is measured in inches of water at 300 fpm. Pressure drop is a measurement expressing the restriction of air flow through an air filter. Pressure drop is measured by the difference in air pressure from one side of an air filter to the other. In an effort to improve the quality of household air, air filter manufacturers must achieve a balance between the density of the filtering media and the resistance of air flowing through it. Frame Strength- the filter’s ability to with stand pressure from airflow. It is important that a filter frame be able to withstand pressure created by air movement, without bending or collapsing. If a frame bends, it can allow unfiltered air to bypass the filter, and if the frame collapses, it can be drawn into the furnace fan. Often resulting in considerable damage to the unit. Factors that should be considered include:-How long the filter will last, and -What type of maintenance is involved? Filters are generally disposable, washable or vacuum-able. Follow the manufacturers’ guidelines for how often to change, wash or vacuum. Note that cleaning a washable filter requires you to handle the dirty filter. A disposable results in much less exposure. What does a filter being electrostatic-ally charged mean to my filtering needs? Electrostatic-ally charged media contains both positively and negatively charged fibers. The particulates passing through the filter will either be positive or negative and therefore stick to the opposing charged fibers.
How often do I need to change or clean my air filter? The recommendations vary from one to three months. Due to individual conditions, the frequency is more a matter of what’s happening at the time. Normal every day cooking, cleaning, sleeping, etc., the filters life will be longer than if you have several pets, smokers, unusually dirty ductwork , or construction going on. Change the filter more frequently when the air in your home is particularly compromised. Will the top of the line, most expensive filter eliminate the need to dust? I’m sorry, no. Some of the particulates are just too heavy to make it to the filter and will inevitably land on the surfaces in your home before getting that far. A good filter can reduce the amount of dust, but will not eliminate it completely. Indoor Air PollutionYou’ve probably noticed how thousands of particles float in a beam of sunlight. This debris isn’t just dust, it’s pollen, pet dander, bacteria and lint, just to name a few. Activities that can increase particulate concentrations: -Dusting-Vacuuming -Cooking-Smoking The United States EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) estimates that most Americans spend as much as 90% of their time indoors, and identifies indoor air pollution as one of the top five risks to the public health. It’s very important to consider ways to reduce indoor air pollution. Why some people develop allergies and others don’t is still un-clear, though genetics are known to play a role in sensitivity. Amount of exposure along with the level of sensitivity factor into whether the reaction is mild, moderate or severe. On our Links Page you will find educational sites to help learn ways to decrease indoor air pollution. |
